James M. Ventura
F or 23 years Jim Ventura has practiced criminal law - on the one hand defending clients against felony, gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor charges such as assault, theft, Drug charges, DWI, and traffic offenses. On the other hand, he's spent years serving as a prosecuting attorney for several local municipalities. His experience on both sides of the counsel table assists him in preparing a well-designed strategy in defense of his clients. Jim's practice is not limited to the Twin Cities Metropolitan area. He has successfully represented clients throughout Minnesota.
James M. Ventura
As an example of Jim's ability, he recently won dismissal of a sexual assault charge in Crow Wing County and persuaded the Minnesota Court of Appeals to close the preliminary Kastigar hearing to the public and press. Jim's work before the Minnesota Court of Appeals also includes State v. Gault, the leading Minnesota case prohibiting the use of compelled testimony in connection with a criminal prosecution and State v. Victorsen in which the Court of Appeals held that an implied consent decision could bind a prosecutor in the criminal trial. This changed a portion of DWI/Implied Consent law that had been in effect since 1984.
Jim is rated AVš by the national attorney rating service, Martindale-Hubbel, is a member of the Federal Public Defender Panel, the Minnesota Society for Criminal Justice, the State and Federal Bar Associations, and the Minnesota and National Associations of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Jim also serves as an advisor to other attorneys under the colleague program sponsored by the State Bar Association.

šThe Martindale-Hubbell AV rating indicates very high to preeminent legal ability and very high ethical standards as established by confidential opinions from members of the Bar.
